Taught by Artistic Director, Nicole A. Martinell (MFA, CMA) and invited guests, workshops emphasize a somatic approach to intermediate-level modern dance technique, layering self-awareness with dynamic movement choices and personal artistry. Each workshop highlights and builds upon a particular theme, such as spirals, sequencing, exertion/recuperation, phrasing, and weight sharing. Students enjoy discovering their soma, taking risks, exploring the body’s capabilities, and integrating concepts into daily life all within a supportive environment.
A self-taught hip-hop dancer and breaking artist, Raphael Xavier has forged an exceptional approach to improvisation-based performance. Drawing from his background as a hip-hop magazine photographer and musician, Xavier confounds and expands the boundaries of dance. Point of Interest, a minimalistic hip-hop piece, offers audiences multiple perspectives on the inner workings of dance.

Rooted in Xavier’s own Ground-Core technique (a Somatic dance technique) the class allows for each participant to identify and strengthen his/her own core, creating an awareness of how it shifts and moves throughout space. The instructor deconstructs various breaking movements which participants are then taught to perform. By making this movement accessible to any body type, the class helps create a new vocabulary for the practitioner, allowing for a better understanding of the body within all dance forms.
