2020-2022 ORCHKIDS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s OrchKids Program is pleased to announce that it is now accepting woodwind, brass, string, and musicianship applications for its class of OrchKids Teaching Fellows for Fall 2020 – Spring 2022. Two Fellowship positions will be accepted from these instrument families next year.
About the OrchKids Program: OrchKids is a year-round, during and after school music program designed to create social change and nurture promising futures for youth in Baltimore City. In collaboration with several community partners including Baltimore City Public Schools, OrchKids provides music instruction, instruments, tutoring, performance opportunities and meals to students free-of-charge. The program works to provide a meaningful platform for promoting equity in arts education, student voice, as well as high quality, intensive musical training. Currently serving over 1,900 students in grades Pre-K to 12, OrchKids operates in ten public schools in Baltimore City.
About the OrchKids Fellowship:
The OrchKids Fellowship is designed to train a new generation of teaching artists and social entrepreneurs. Nestled in the heart of Baltimore City, OrchKids Fellows develop their unique teaching voice and philosophy through rigorous professional development, immersive teaching experiences and collaborative leadership.
Through this two-year program, Fellows receive training in nonprofit administration, project cultivation, and teaching in both private and large group settings.
Successful Fellows demonstrate and embrace OrchKids’ educational philosophy which aims to simultaneously foster students’ instrumental skills (i.e. technique, learning diverse, challenging repertoire) AND creativity (e.g. improvisation and composition). OrchKids‘ educational approach also centers itself around fluency in using music as a tool for social change. This is accomplished through restorative, classroom management techniques, trauma-informed teaching, an awareness of racism and implicit bias, and collaborative student composition.
Each month, Fellows will also have the unique opportunity to gain targeted learning opportunities via learning modules in nonprofit management in the areas of development, education/programming, operations, marketing, as well as perspectives from leaders in the arts education field. A large part of the fellowship is the cultivation of performances for the community. Fellows will program, curate, and perform in at least one community engagement concert each year involving OrchKids students, developing their entrepreneurial skills as they use their art to connect with local neighborhoods.
What does an Orchids Fellow Look Like…
Embraces OrchKids’ mission, goals, and guiding principles
Commits to learning about and becoming a dedicated member of the Baltimore community
Serve as a consistent and compassionate mentor to OrchKids students
Teaches and works alongside OrchKids teaching artists in private, group, and ensemble settings weekly, embracing OrchKids’ educational philosophy
Organizes and performs one concert a year that aims to engage the community
Leads and assists with a variety of administrative and organizational projects
Attends Professional Development workshops and meetings that cover a variety of educational and social justice-minded topics
Participates in all collaborative composition project weeks, in which staff and visiting teaching artists lead students in creating a collective and original performance
General Qualifications:
Strong desire to use music for social change, striving to engage with and make a positive and sustainable impact on one’s community
Commitment to developing oneself as an educator, performer, and community activist through mentor feedback and self-reflection
Passion for working with youth and desire to serve as a role model to students
Considerable experience teaching beginner – intermediate level students
The confidence to lead students and assert oneself in the classroom
High-level performance skill on one’s instrument
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team of people
Willingness to jump in and embrace OrchKids’ approach to music-making through creative composition, improvisation, and diverse repertoire
. * Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field required
Wind (Brass or Woodwind) Fellow Qualifications:
For Brass players: experience or familiarity playing and teaching a range of brass instruments, including trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone and tuba
For Woodwind players: experience or familiarity in playing and teaching a range of woodwind instruments is ideal; ability to play all orchestral woodwind instruments at a professional level is not required
Training in early level instrumental woodwind pedagogy highly preferred
String Fellow Qualifications:
Experience or familiarity playing and teaching a range of string instruments, including violin, viola, cello, and double bass
Training in early level instrumental string pedagogy highly preferred
Musicianship Fellow Qualifications:
Experience working with groups of young children (pre-k through 3rd grade) in educational activities involving music, movement, and singing
Familiarity with a wide range of early childhood pedagogical methods including Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroz, Gordon, etc.
Training in early childhood music highly preferred
Hours and Compensation:
Two-year commitment, September – May each year. 30 hours/week, including occasional weekends and evenings. Teaching hours will be approximately 20 hours/week. $18,000 stipend per year. $200 monthly housing stipend as applicable (non-Baltimore residents). Additional paid work available during the OrchKids’ 4 week summer program and 3 collective composition weeks which take place during the school year. Opportunity to participate in additional paid work with partner organizations. $200 Professional Development stipend available with the potential for speaking and performance engagements as well.
