Baltimore Youth Arts is a creative entrepreneurship and job training program that provides artistic and professional opportunities to youth, ages 14-22, with a focus on those in the justice system. Our mission is to assist young people in gaining the creative, personal, and educational skills that will enable them to become leaders in their communities.

Responsibilities

The Studio Apprentice Program Manager is responsible for the coordination of the Studio Apprentice Program (SAP). They are responsible for the supervision of BYA Youth Apprentices, lesson plan development, recruitment, and relevant partnership development. The Studio Apprentice Manager collaborates with other staff on developing both the professional development and creative entrepreneurship components of the program.

Program Development and Management

  • Recruit youth from community partner sites, and local schools

  • Supervise Studio Apprentices

    • Track hours and attendance for Apprentices

    • Train and onboard Apprentices

  • Collaborate with the Entrepreneurship Facilitator to research potential clients (i.e t-shirt printing, murals) and research opportunities for youth to sell their work (Pop-ups, local businesses)

  • Lead 1-2 classes/week (at the BYA Community Studio and/or Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center)

  • Co-Interview and hire contracted instructors along with other staff and youth

  • Manage Contracted instructors at the BYA Community Studio

  • Develop partnerships to support SAP programming

Communications and Documentation

  • Coordinate the documentation of youth work at the end of each session

Program-wide (All Staff)

  • Assist in passing out snacks and food

  • Attend weekly staff meetings and bi-monthly best practices training

  • Work with BYA staff to develop field trips and invite guest artists to speak to BYA youth

  • Uphold BYA's values

  • Assist in maintaining the BYA Community Studio by ensuring that youth have access to supplies and that the workspace is safe and organized

Desired Skills and Qualifications

Minimum Education: B.A. in a related field or 5+ years relevant experience

  • Experience working with and alongside youth, 14-22

  • Experience working in community programming or non-profit

  • History of strong creative practice (preferably in painting, screen printing, or graphic design)

  • Belief in the creative potential and voices of young people

  • Understanding of the history of the US justice system and willingness to advocate for currently detained youth

  • Excellent communication skills for developing and maintaining relationships with youth members and community partners

  • Strong oral and written communication

  • Proficient in MS Office/Google Docs

  • Intermediate proficiency in Adobe Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) preferred

  • Ability to work both independently and on a team

  • Strong organizational skills and time-management

  • Personal initiative and the ability to follow through with projects

  • Current driver’s license and reliable transportation preferred

  • Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings (4-5 weekend shifts/year)

  • Must be willing to take an annual background check (While BYA does not deny employment based on an applicant's record, there are certain charges that would prevent an applicant from working with youth)
