CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Responsible for the overall design, construction, installation, repair and presentation of museum exhibitions
• Understands and adheres to best practices in art handling and artifact display principles and practices
• Knows current museum lighting principles and practices
• Researches ideas, materials and suppliers for exhibit additions and improvements
• In collaboration with key stakeholders within the museum, makes decisions regarding proper visual interpretation; recommends solutions to design problems to produce desired visual effect and educational message
• Works with contract fabricators and service providers, and prepares contracts and purchasing agreements
• Supervises maintenance personnel and contractors who assist in the construction, installation, and maintenance of exhibits
• Controls inventory of installation equipment and supplies
• Seeks ways to update and improve existing exhibits
• Works with the Registrar and Collections Manager to assure proper use of collection artifacts and information
• Improve and provide written exhibit signage and way-finding
• Works with Education, Associate Curator and Registrar and Collections Manager to insure adherence to ADA requirements and universal design
• Works with Marketing to provide promotional materials and exhibit information and support its promotional and fundraising efforts
• Other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work requires prolonged physical exertion including walking, stretching, reaching, bending, and carrying. Incumbent regularly handles moderately heavy materials and equipment, and objects of art that are unique and valuable. Work involves climbing ladders and working from scaffolds to install art and equipment at the museum. Work requires visual acuity for color verification, quality of workmanship, and aesthetic detailing throughout the exhibition production process.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in industrial design, graphic design field, or equivalent experience and training
• Five years’ experience exhibit design
• Can prepare and maintain detailed budgets and schedules
• Evidence of creative or technical ability as demonstrated by portfolio
• Ability to take initiative, meet deadlines and work both independently and in collaboration with others
• Ability to manage multiple projects at one time
• Ability to solve complex technical or design problems
• Demonstrated knowledge of fabrication and drafting skills using wood, metal, and plastic, electrical and mechanical skills
• Ability to troubleshoot
• Supervisory ability and ability to work with others in a public service operation
• Skills in computer-aided design and desktop publishing, I.e. SketchUp, AutoCad, Adobe In Design (including Photoshop and Illustrator, etc.)
