The Howard County Arts Council, a multi-purpose, non-profit arts agency, seeks a qualified individual for the position of Deputy Director. The Deputy Director is responsible for programming and managing the day-to-day operations of a vibrant community art center. Candidates should have experience that demonstrates leadership with an emphasis on diverse community-based arts programming.
The Deputy Director reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for managing the Howard County Center for the Arts, a 32,000 sq. ft. multi-disciplinary facility that offers a wide range of programs and opportunities in the arts. The Center exists to encourage an active, supportive relationship between artists and the public, which is essential to the cultural development of our community. It houses two exhibition spaces, a flexible black box theatre, one large meeting room, a reception area, three classrooms, a dance studio, 14 individual artists’ studios, and administrative offices for three resident arts groups. The Center is open 7 days a week: Mon to Thu 9am-10pm; Friday 9am - 8pm; Saturday 10am – 4pm; and Sun NOON – 4pm; it is also open later for productions in the theatre as needed
The Deputy reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for planning, implementing and marketing all programs; tracking and maintaining budgets; hiring and supervising 2 full-time program and 4 part-time building staff and 25 independent contractors; researching and writing grants; implementing and evaluating programs; managing daily building operations, safety and building maintenance; and other duties as assigned.
The Deputy works closely with the Executive Director and a 15-member volunteer Board of Directors to set long-term goals, strategies and objectives for the Howard County Arts Council and Center for the Arts.
The ideal candidate should have a B.A., M.A. preferred, and 4+ years of paid work experience in arts program development, administration, and implementation including 1+ years in a supervisory management role. Significant experience with increased responsibilities similar to those indicated herein along with a proven commitment to non-profit work, particularly in the arts, are needed. Demonstrated ability in office management and budgeting, maintaining positive working relationships with a wide variety of constituents, managing staff, and handling multiple, concurrent and high priority tasks is also required.
Other qualifications needed: strong computer, communication, audience development, customer service, and organizational skills; commitment to the arts; self directed, understanding of public arts policy; experience in running art classes or programs; excellent writing, proofreading, and record keeping skills; experience coordinating logistical details; experience providing guidance and responding to inquiries; and ability to handle multiple projects at once in a demanding, fast-paced small office environment while maintaining composure and confidence. Must be able to use a personal computer and have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Must have own transportation; be able to operate an automobile, computers and related office equipment; lift up to 50 pounds; remain seated for long periods of time; and bend, stoop, reach, and climb without difficulty. Sales Force and marketing experience is a plus.
This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position; occasional evening and week-end hours are required. Salary range: mid to high 40’s depending on experience.
