The Maryland Historical Society Seeks Digital Education Manager

Hours: 35 hours/week, Monday-Friday, with occasional weekend and evening programs

The Maryland Historical Society (MdHS) has an immediate opening for an enthusiastic full-time Digital Education Manager. Over the past five years, MdHS has developed a wide range of digital initiatives, including a thriving distance learning program (Virtual Field Trips or VFTs) and an interactive online history curriculum (Historical Investigations Portal or HIP). Our VFTs are now utilized by students in 21 of 24 Maryland counties and 13 additional states beyond Maryland. We are fully committed to expanding digital offerings, including interactive digital gallery tours, increased integration of technology into exhibitions, and streaming of lectures and programs.

The ideal candidate for this position is a dynamic, collaborative, and high-energy individual who has experience in museum education, possesses an engaging “on-air” personality, grasps the potential of technology in museums, dreams big and makes it happen! This position reports to the Director of Education and is part of a department of five staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the green room studio used for Virtual Field Trips (VFTs)
    • Develop and revise virtual programs for school and adult audiences
    • Share responsibility for program delivery with the Digital Education Assistant
    • Oversee the equipment, software, and other technology in the green room studio
  • Spearhead development of digital tours and exhibition elements
    • Collaborate with the curatorial team to create interactive digital content for exhibitions
    • Work closely with vendors and partners to develop new digital elements for the public, including interactive smartphone or tablet tours
  • Coordinate with school districts to integrate the Historical Investigations Portal (online history curriculum) into Learning Management Systems (LMSs) and provide technical support
  • Develop and implement strategy for using technology to make public programs more accessible across the state of Maryland, including the streaming of lectures
  • Contribute to overall operations of the Education Department, including writing lesson plans, developing new programs, professional development, marketing and developing content for social media, and staffing school programs when necessary
  • Supervise interns and volunteers
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • B.A. in Museum Studies, Museum Education, Public History, Education, History, or related field; M.A. is preferred
  • 1-2 years of experience delivering engaging programming with children, especially those in grades K-8
  • 1-2 years of experience managing digital projects in a museum or nonprofit setting
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and meticulous attention to detail
  • Knowledge of and interest in U.S. history; knowledge of Maryland history, a plus
  • Possess a passion for history, art, and education
  • Self-starter willing to learn new technology
  • Familiarity with Apple and PC
  • Strong technology skills, including knowledge of video editing, Prezi, videoconferencing software, Adobe Suite, and G Suite; experience with graphic design or app creation, a plus
  • Experience working with lesson plans and standards; researching in archives, a plus

About the Position:

This is a FULL-TIME position. Full benefits package included. Evenings and weekends required (average of 2-3 per month).
