The National Public Radio hit series Selected Shorts takes the stage at the Columbia Festival of the Arts as part of the Speak(easy) Howard series. Spellbinding short stories by established and emerging writers take on a new life when they are performed by stars of the stage and screen. Experience the series live as host Sam Underwood, along with Valorie Curry and Atandwa Kani, present stories that show us how to share our wishes, love our tribe, and live our best life. Join us for an evening of theatrical tales that teach us it’s never too late (or early) to seize the day.
Join in saluting the founding of the Columbia Film Society and HoCoPoLitSo with an afternoon that celebrates the education of girls, the beauty of story, and the power of collective action. This joint anniversary event features a talk by one of the writers of Girl Rising and a showing of the documentary film that inspired global awareness about the importance of education for girls. Novelist Aminatta Forna wrote the portion of the film about a girl from her home country, Sierra Leone, and her dreams of education and independence.
This year’s Columbia Festival of the Arts will end in a joint celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Columbia Film Society and the 45th anniversary of the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society (HoCoPoLitSo). Join in saluting the founding of these community arts organizations with an afternoon that celebrates the education of girls, the beauty of story, and the power of collective action.
Join the artists of Baltimore Musicales for an evening of powerful and moving Southern stories: Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with text by James Agee, Richard Danielpour’s Triptych with texts by Toni Morrison, and Paul Bowles’ Blue Mountain Ballads with texts by Tennessee Williams. Featured artists include soprano Thea Tullman Moore, mezzo-soprano Adrienne Ivey, baritone Jason Widney, and pianist Patricia McKewen Amato. A wine reception will follow the performance. Seating is not reserved and tickets will also be available at the door.

Prepare for summer fun as we lead you through a discussion of BSF's 2019 summer shows: the heartbreaking tragedy Romeo and Juliet and the side-splitting comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor. We will discuss the historical and literary background of these plays along with their characters and themes.
