Starting with early portraiture, “Reflections: A Brief History of Looking at Ourselves” is a new photography exhibition exploring themes of identity and place that are at the cornerstone of human experience and widely examined in contemporary photography. The year-long exhibition draws from the Maryland Historical Society’s photograph holdings, including daguerreotypes, salt prints, glass negatives, silver gelatin and digital prints. The exhibition opening June 19 is free and includes a light reception.

The Peale Center is thrilled to launch its new performance and storytelling series, Elegant Rendezvous, with the legendary Joyce J. Scott. Inspired by an 1814 advertisement for the Peale, where Rembrandt Peale called his museum “an elegant Rendezvous for taste, curiosity and leisure,” this new series features Baltimore area creators and innovators sharing their work and stories.
In this talk, University of Maryland historian Dr. Richard Bell will explore the success of the Tony Award-winning musical, “Hamilton,” and what it tells us about the marriage of history and show business. Learn what this amazing musical gets right and gets wrong about Alexander Hamilton, the American Revolution, the birth of the United Sates and why all that matters. Bell will examine choices “Hamilton’s” creators made to simplify, dramatize and humanize the complicated events and stories on which the show is based.
sur/reality is Baltimore City Hall’s first-ever art exhibition highlighting the work of local transgender artists from Baltimore. Curated by Gender Museum in partnership with the Mayor’s Office and Baltimore City LGBTQ Affairs, sur/reality is an exploration of the dual existence of transness both as an experience & as an identity. Featuring a multitude of mediums, motifs, textures and concepts, the show will culminate in a reception and intimate artist talk-back with Gender Museum Curator and creative Jamie Grace Alexander. The show is FREE, and all are welcome.
