Mark Bradford’s exhibition for the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale was born out of his longtime commitment to the inherently social nature of the material world we all inhabit.

This exhibition of dazzling Kuba textiles presented in the BMA’s Cone Collection galleries reveals how a central African kingdom independently developed a form of modernist abstraction in the 20th century. The Kuba kingdom, on the southern edge of the Congolese Rainforest in central Africa, developed one of the greatest civilizations in the history of the continent. Art and design were central to their life. In addition to an elaborate and varied masquerade tradition, Kuba men and women were prolific textile artists, even weaving houses and embroidering currency.
It has been more than 50 years since John Waters (American, b. 1946) filmed his first short, Hag in a Black Leather Jacket. The set was the roof of his parents’ Baltimore home, and the action, shot on stock stolen by a friend, involved an interracial marriage. Over the following decades, Waters’ reputation as an uncompromising cultural force has grown not only in the cinematic field, but also through his visual artwork, writing, and performances.

A fully immersive and interactive experience! The Archives of the Deep Now have been recreated by Submersive from instructions left behind by The Institute of Visionary History before they mysteriously vanished in 1997. Each box from The Archives contains an experiment designed to conjure visions of the past in order to ask a specific question. Episodes Two through Five, found clustered in a corner of the basement archive, appear to be connected in some significant way.

Depth of Field: Recent Acquisitions
August 29 – December 19
UMBC Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery
The exhibition Depth of Field presents approximately one hundred images acquired over the last ten years by UMBC’s Photography Collections through generous gifts from donors and artists. The photographs on view highlight the breadth and depth of the collection and illustrate the range of forms, technology, and artists that historically shaped the medium and are presently impacting its ongoing evolution.
Curated by Adriel Luis, “ALLLLLL NATURAL” features artists Selin Balci, Maggie Gourlay, Caroline Hatfield, Catherine Mapp, Kaitlin O’Keefe, Antoinette Suiter and Chiang Tai, who consider the thin line between reality and fantasy. Each work illustrates the tensions between what is, and what isn’t. They question if all that emerges from the earth is necessarily real, and if that which is made in our hands and our minds is immediately synthetic.
“Traveling Home” is a collaborative exhibition by Rachel and Jon Lundak, featuring sculptural works that explore the similarities and differences between the spaces people travel through, and the spaces they call home. Through a series of objects and installations, the artists unify their unique perspectives to examine transitory spaces, and ideas of “house” versus “home.”
A kinetic sculpture and video installation by Baltimore-based artist Brian Funk, “Wandering Properties” is a playfully political work that employs humor to explore social constructs surrounding the suburban home and infrastructure. Utilizing common household materials and projection mapping, Funk creates an immersive environment of miniature, motorized suburban homes that awkwardly putter along within the space. Viewers are invited to engage with the piece, gently mediating as the properties snag and push against each other.
