In the spring of 2007, WTMD radio host Sam Sessa had an outlandish idea: take two Baltimore musicians who had never heard of each other, pair them up and force them to write four original songs in six weeks. The musicians he chose, Caleb Stine and Saleem Heggins, couldn't have come from more different backgrounds. Stine was an Americana singer/songwriter; Heggins an MC who liked vintage hip-hop. They didn't know each another before this little experiment called the Baltimore Music Project.

"New Orleans barrelhouse piano, the Impressionism of Ravel and Duke Ellington’s jaggy solo-piano sound form the bedrock of Lafayette Gilchrist’s style at the keyboard. But if there’s one big influence on the way he thinks about rhythm, it’s the deeply swinging ‘pocket' of a classic go-go beat... On 'Dark Matter’…the hypnosis of the pocket comes through.” – Giovanni Russonello, The New York Times
