UMBC's Humanities Forum presents DaMaris B. Hill, Associate Professor of Creative Writing, English, and African American Studies, University of Kentucky, who will read from and speak about her poetry collection, A Bound Woman Is a Dangerous Thing, a narrative-in-verse that bears witness to American women of color burdened by incarceration. In A Bound Woman Is a Dangerous Thing, Hill presents bitter, unflinching history that artfully captures the personas of these captivating, bound yet unbridled African-American women.

Baltimore's Proper Nouns throw some of their indie, upbeat, poppy, punk vibes onto the little screen with this Virtual album release. On Proper Nouns’ debut LP, Feel Free (Phonebooth Records), Spencer Compton runs each song like a sharp, witty, Poli Sci salon, coating complex ideas in punk energy and power pop candy floss. Coming on like Script Politti’s Green Gartside on a frenetic Minutemen beat, Compton aims his heady songs at the gut, letting the personal and the political swing in unison.

UMBC's Center for Innovation, Research and Creativity in the Arts (CIRCA) presents Marnie Ellen Hertzler and Corey Hughes. Hertzler is a video artist, animator and filmmaker working in experimental narrative and hybrid documentary; Hughes is director and cinematographer traversing narrative, documentary and experimental realms. The two will discuss their individual work as well as their director-cinematographer collaborations.
UMBC's Social Sciences Forum presents Tracey Osborne, associate professor and endowed Presidential Chair in the Management of Complex Systems Department and the Management of Innovation, Sustainability and Technology (MIST) Program at UC Merced, who will speak on “Playbook for Climate Justice: Our Best Hope for Solving the Climate Crisis.”
UMBC's Humanities Forum presents the Annual Daphne Harrison Lecture, featuring Ruth Wilson Gilmore, Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Director of the Center for Place, Culture, and Politics, the Graduate Center, City University of New York, who will speak on Making Abolition Geographies: Social Justice Organizing for Vulnerable Households, Workers, and Communities.
The 2021 Howard Community College Dance Company Concert will feature student dancers performing the work of faculty and guest choreographers. Directed by Elizabeth Higgins, the production includes the choreography of Elizabeth Higgins, Alex Krebs, Darion Smith, and Vincent Thomas. This virtual concert integrates innovative movement and design, as experienced through the art of dance for the camera.
Choral Arts Gala, formerly Ruby Cabaret, is our annual fundraiser to benefit Baltimore Choral Arts' education and outreach programs. From the comfort of your own home, join us for this multi-day celebration featuring alluring auction items and a special performance by Tony-nominated Broadway star Euan Morton. The online auction will run from April 30 at 9 am ET to May 2 at 9 pm ET. The performance with Euan Morton is Sunday, May 2 at 5:30 pm ET.
The Howard Community College (HCC) film program launched a film discussion series this spring. The series operates much like a book club. Participants choose the films that interest them from the schedule and watch the films at their convenience before the scheduled discussion. Offered virtually, the discussion series takes advantage of film titles available on popular streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime and Netflix. The 7 p.m.
McDaniel College students perform in the radio play “Twisted Tales of Poe,” which is based on the stories and poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Directed by theatre arts faculty member Gené Fouché, the performance will be broadcast on McDaniel College’s student-run radio station, Green Terror Radio (WGTR), on Friday, April 30 and Thursday, May 6 at 7 p.m. The broadcast may be accessed at mgtradiostation.wordpress.com.
This series will offer current information and practical strategies for promoting mental wellness in faith communities. Participants will be empowered to help their communities end the stigma surrounding mental health conditions. We encourage participants to attend each presentation in the series. The film, which earned Golden Globe and SAG nominations for Chalamet, is based on Nic’s New York Times bestselling memoir, Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines and David’s bestseller, which shares its title with the movie.
