"a grandly talented improviser" - Allaboutjazz.com
"when he steps in front of his own combo, Baker's liable to bring the house down; he has a broad, powerful tone and a sure-footed improvisational attack that winds and zags. It's confident and questioning, all at once." - Giovanni Russonello

Baltimore's Proper Nouns throw some of their indie, upbeat, poppy, punk vibes onto the little screen with this Virtual album release. On Proper Nouns’ debut LP, Feel Free (Phonebooth Records), Spencer Compton runs each song like a sharp, witty, Poli Sci salon, coating complex ideas in punk energy and power pop candy floss. Coming on like Script Politti’s Green Gartside on a frenetic Minutemen beat, Compton aims his heady songs at the gut, letting the personal and the political swing in unison.

About the Concert
Welcome to Part Two of Magnificent Movie Music with Rachel Franklin. In The Great Masterpieces, we narrow our focus to superb films whose music set new standards for film composition, and influenced every movie score that followed.

Swoon for the lyricism of Monteverdi, get swept off your feet in dance-crazy France, and awe at the intellectual grandeur of Bach – and of course, we’ll bring you a Chandos Anthem by our namesake, Handel!

Shriver Hall Concert Series presents the Calidore string quartet. The Calidore Quartet’s balance of “intellect and expression” (Los Angeles Times) has won it international acclaim. The ensemble, an alum of SHCS’s Discovery Series, returns to Baltimore with the world premiere of a performance pre-recorded in New York City in a private home. The concert features the world streaming premiere of a new quartet by Hannah Lash, as well as Schubert's transcendent final quartet and Dvořák’s “American” Quartet, an ebullient work of joyous lyricism.
