Oropendola is the project of Brooklyn-based singer, composer, and keyboardist Joanna Schubert, whose music blends theatrical chamber pop, playful dissonance, and lyrical storytelling. Her songs move between the whimsical and the intimate, drawing from keys-based art-pop and indie-folk traditions.

Putty Hill film screening + Q&A w/ Director Matt Porterfield

Friends and family of Cory, a young man who has died of an overdose, gather at a Baltimore-area karaoke bar for his wake and compare stories about him. Gradually, as it becomes clear that there are many holes in their recollections about Cory, they fill in the blanks by talking about things that reveal aspects of their own lives. Among those mourning him and searching for meaning are his cousin Jenny, his sister Zoe and his brother James.

Alfred Yun comes to An die Musik Live to perform songs from his latest album, Voice and Phenomenon, which explores the relationship between love and violence. It uses the medium of the voice — gibberish, games, poems, singing, spoken word, laughter, and more — to explore different forms of love and violence. The album invites the listener into an intimate account of these disparate voices, sounds, and experiences. It is the most personal and revealing work of his career.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Beatles Rubber Soul album Robert Friedman, Kurt Hammond, Ava Oelke, Kaitlyn Lee, Sam Nitzberg, Kirk Kness, Pete Naron, Tom Chalkley, Mike Barth, Hoppy Hopkins, Zee Smith, Dan Naiman, Michael Spittel, Paul Margolis, and John Shock will play at An die Musik Live. The band will interpret music written and recorded in a month during the fall of 1965 comprising the UK album, an associated single, and one song from the American version of the album. Songs will be performed in acoustic arrangements, in small ensembles, and with a full band.

For this performance Justin and his band will offer a tribute to the timeless and timely music of Fela Kuti at An die Musik Live! Fela Aníkúlápó Kútì was a Nigerian musician and political activist. He is regarded as the principal innovator of Afrobeat, a Nigerian music genre that combines West African music with American funk and jazz.

Justin’s versatility will be on display in what promises to be a dynamic performance of classic Fela tunes - and may feature Justin’s own compositions to align with the vibe of the evening.

Shipp has been referred to as the "elder statesman" of avant-jazz by DownBeat magazine, but the reach and scope of his music extends much further than mere genre. The Cosmic Piano delivers on that promise - a solo recording that taps into the deeper exploratory potential of the instrument, with Shipp channeling a lifetime of knowledge and a daunting array of influences into nearly an hour of spontaneous, enlightened and joyfully rendered music.
