Korean Movie Screening & Social: Swing Kids

With summer in full swing, the Baltimore Korean Movie Series rolls on in July with the blockbuster dance movie Swing Kids, which is part of the Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C.'s regional outreach presenting free screenings of milestone films at Parkway Theatre in Baltimore, in partnership with the Maryland Film Festival.

Swing Kids will be screened to celebrate the free arts festival Artscap, which will takes place Friday, July 19 through Sunday, July 21, 2019 along Mount Royal Avenue and North Charles Street in Baltimore, Maryland.

The swinging musical dance movie, directed by Hyeong-Cheol Kang, is about the story of Gi-Soo Ro(Do Kyung-Soo), a tap dancing North Korean soldier who was held captive in the Geoje POW camp during the Korean War. The POW camp itself is under intense strife between prisoners who are pro-communists and anti-communists.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Sergeant Jackson (Jared Grimes) is ordered by a superior officer into forming a tap dancing team from the POW camp. He holds an audition in the camp and selects Chinese soldier Xiaofang (Kim Min-Ho), South Korean Kang Byung-Sam (Oh Jung-Se) who was falsely accused of being a communist sympathizer and civilian Yang Pan-Rae (Park Hye-Soo) who wants to support her family. Sergeant Jackson also recognizes the immense talent Rho Ki-Soo has for dance. Soon, the 'Swing Kids' are formed, but will their dreams of dancing come true?

This film is not rated. 133 mins. In Korean with English subtitles. Light Korean food will be provided at 6:30 p.m. just before the film is screened.
