Down by the Delta African-American Filmmakers Showcase

Down by the Delta African-American Filmmakers Showcase

Under-educated substance abuser Loretta (Alfre Woodard), needing a change in her life, moves with her two children from the Chicago projects to live with her Uncle Earl (Al Freeman, Jr.) in her family’s ancestral home in rural Mississippi. Earl puts Loretta to work in his restaurant and teaches her about her proud family’s rich history.

This warm, uplifting, poetic film is the feature film directorial debut of poet and writer Maya Angelou. The remarkable cast also includes Wesley Snipes, Mary Alice, Esther Rolle, and Loretta Devine.

“The movie reminds you of what [‘family values’] really mean in terms of caring, self-sacrifice and the nurturing of tradition through the honoring of one’s ancestors.” – Stephen Holden, The New York Times

“Woodard is magical…in a beautifully layered performance that moves from hard-knocks desperation to a sense of serenity…’Down in the Delta,’ with its old-fashioned charm and classy look, ultimately digs deeply into enduring truths about family ties, hard work, and the value of simplicity in a world cluttered with distractions.” – Peter Stack, San Francisco Chronicle

“Maya Angelou tells first-time screenwriter Myron Goble’s absorbing and far-ranging story with simplicity and directness while guiding a splendid ensemble cast to an array of impressive portrayals.” – Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times
