Join us for the true story of a play, a playwright, and a "plucky troupe of Yiddish theater artists from 1906 Warsaw to 1923 Broadway, from risky experiment to global sensation—and ultimately shattering scandal" according to Baltimore Center Stage. Join other solo theater enthusiasts for a shared treat. You can sit with us.

The latest hit from the playwright of A Civil War Christmas, The Baltimore Waltz, and How I Learned to Drive, the highly acclaimed and Obie, Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk and Tony Award winning INDECENT pays homage to artists ahead of their time and doomed to pay the price.

In the play INDECENT Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, Paula Vogel recounts the controversy surrounding the play GOD OF VENGEANCE by Sholem Asch produced on Broadway in 1923. Asch's original production of his play, premiering in 1906 to a more receptive European audience, tells the story of the love between a prostitute (Manke) and the daughter of the brothel's owner (Rifkelef). When play was translated from Yiddish to English for its Broadway run, the love story was obscured with a predatory theme of Manke seducing Rikelef. When it premiered, the entire cast of the original Broadway production was arrested on the grounds of obscenity.

On the Broadway production of INDECENT, Newsday's Linda Winer asked. "Has there ever been anything quite like Indecent, a play that touches — I mean deeply touches — so much rich emotion about history and the theater, anti-Semitism, homophobia, censorship, world wars, red-baiting and, oh, yes, joyful human passion?"

We're excited about this year's culturally dynamic lineup at Baltimore Center Stage for the 2018/19 season. Exposure to diverse artistic expression allows us to connect on our humanity first providing a deeper understanding and sense of empathy, not necessarily "acceptance" or adoption of another's beliefs or orientation.
