Join The Musical Autist on Sunday April 7th at 2pm for our spring Sensory Friendly Concert, hosted in partnership with The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University!

We're proud to announce our featured performer, Bulliet Trio, comprised of Ellen Gruber (oboe), Yoshiaki Horiguchi (Double Bass), and Mafalda Santos (cello). The concert will also feature guest performances from local musical autists and Musical Autist Troupe!

This SFC will be held in Joe Byrd Hall on campus at Peabody in Baltimore, and parking is available on site in the Peabody Parking Garage (606 St. Paul Street) and other nearby locations. About Sensory Friendly Concerts:
Sensory Friendly Concerts are inclusive performances of the fine arts that celebrate Neurodiversity and autistic advocacy. These events are always open to the public, with accommodations provided for audience members with neurological differences who may be more sensitive to the environment. Our motto for Sensory Friendly Concerts is “hand-flapping allowed!”

Accommodations are provided by keeping volume levels low and lighting soft. Noise-reduction headphones are available to use, as well as an adjacent “quiet room” with sensory manipulatives, in case audience members need a break from the concert environment. Additionally, PA (public address) systems are not used in Sensory Friendly Concerts. Those with hypo-sensitivity to sound are encouraged to come close to the stage during the performance, where the volume is louder. Additionally, they are welcome to sit around the musicians on stage and even lie underneath the piano for optimal vibro-acoustic sensory input. Credentialed music therapists and other trained volunteers help facilitate these musical interactions so that family members and caregivers can relax and enjoy the performances. Other provisions for promoting engagement with live music are foam blocks, for those who enjoy extra tactile feedback during their listening experience, as well as scarves, for those who enjoy dancing or moving their bodies freely around the room.

Parents and caregivers are responsible for those whom they bring at all times, but our hope is that parents/caregivers can sit back, relax, and enjoy the performance, as well as enjoy a social environment where their loved one can enjoy being in an "autistic friendly space."
