Cosmic World of Moondog

Cosmic World of Moondog

Blind and handsome, for over 30 years, one of the most recognizable figures in New York City was Louis Hardin, Jr., known to most as Moondog, a tower of a man, who stood on Sixth Avenue and 54th Street, dressed as a Viking, selling poetry and playing homemade instruments.

Born in Kansas the son of a preacher, Moondog lost his eyesight at sixteen and studied music at the Iowa School for the Blind. His own journey took him from the Midwest, to New York, where he went from street musician to beloved composer. Along the way he hung out with Charlie Parker and Benny Goodman, lived with Philip Glass, was interviewed by Johnny Carson, had fashion designers create entire collections around his look, but most importantly, created a body of music that is as sonically unique as the man himself.

Tonight, Baltimore musicians including (but not limited to) Liz Downing, Boister, Mind on Fire, Michael Willis, Adam Rosenblatt, Tatevik Khoja-Eynatyan, and Hanna Olivegren, perform his amazing compositions and try their best to inhabit the cosmic world that Moondog created.
