"A Passion for Poulenc"

"A Passion for Poulenc"

“A Passion for Poulenc” is a Tiffany Series concert featuring the work of both Francis Poulenc and Maurice Duruflé.

Poulenc’s “Gloria” will be performed by Brown Memorial’s Chancel Choir and soprano Natanya Washer, with Michael Britt conducting. Renowned Princeton Chapel Organist Eric Plutz will serve as organist for "Gloria," and will also play Maurice Duruflé's "Prélude et fugue sur le nom d'Alain," written in tribute to his friend, the young French organist and composer Jehan Alain, killed during WWII. The program also includes Poulenc's "Sonata for Four Hands," performed by Michael Britt and E. Joseph Teter.

Poulence was one of "les Six," a group of young composers who came of age in post-war 1920s Paris, the city of Picasso, Man Ray and Diaghilev, and of Stravinsky who had just scandalized everyone with “The Rite of Spring.” Jazz was new, and music from the circus and the music hall was in the air. Les Six were championed by Jean Cocteau.

Free parking in the school lot off the 100-block of Mosher Street and shuttle service to the church available. Students get free admission.
