North Avenue Knowledge Exchange

North Avenue Knowledge Exchange

The North Avenue Knowledge Exchange is an educational program focused on building sustainable relationships that strengthen and learn with the communities along North Avenue. This justice-oriented, community-based education seeks to build on the agency of grassroots organizing and the existing beauty and knowledge within Penn-North, Station North, and Greenmount West. Guided by the principle that everyone has something to teach and everyone has something to learn, the Knowledge Exchange aims to connect community members with access to city-wide and community-based resources by bringing together key neighborhood stakeholders to vision, build, and sustain this information-sharing network.

This project is committed to providing access to information and community resources in our support of social justice and civil rights. The North Avenue Knowledge Exchange aims to create equitable spaces and infrastructural support to share knowledge, power and access to education in our community. Based in a model of exchange, this program aims to contribute to the livelihood and sustainability of community-based learning.

The North Avenue Knowledge Exchange is a partnership among Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse, and Station North Arts & Entertainment, Inc. (SNAE), that builds on the Baltimore Free School as a way to strengthen this community-wide network of grassroots education and information sharing.

From May to December 2017, the North Avenue Knowledge Exchange invites the public to participate in free public programs, including one-off workshops, ongoing classes, and community get-togethers in the form of “Knowledge Exchange Days.” Building on our pilot project in February 2016, the North Avenue Knowledge Exchange seeks to extend its collaboration with communities along North Avenue. We have launched an open call for teachers/workshop leaders to develop skill-building and skill-sharing content. The Knowledge Exchange provides space, scheduling, small artist fees for workshop leaders, and visibility through our marketing and promotion platforms.
