North Avenue Knowledge Exchange Day: Free Workshops, Community Connections, and Creative Expression
BALTIMORE, MD - On October 28, 2017, Station North Arts & Entertainment District will transform into a canvas showcasing nearly 50 workshops, all of which are FREE and open to the public.
The National Kidney Foundation of Maryland and Delaware (NKF-MD-DE) will provide this free screening to identify early markers for high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney disease. No appointments are needed for the screening and any adult can participate.
Lasting about 20 minutes, the screening includes blood pressure and weight checks, as well as counseling with a doctor and dietitian. Additionally, blood tests may be given to those needing to have their blood sugar and kidney function checked.
Musica Spira (Music Breathes) will open their second season with “ But They Are At Peace: Music for the Feast of All Souls” on Sunday, October 29. The emerging artist-run ensemble is directed by Paula Maust (harpsichord and organ) and Grace Srinivasan (soprano), both Peabody graduates. Their mission is to capture the essence of life’s stories with innovative musical programming that makes baroque music relevant to issues in contemporary society.

The Art of Dialect: England & Ireland
Unpack the roles of professional production through dynamic six week classes. Each class highlights a different point of view through lecture, discussion, and exploration of dramatic skill.
The actor inhabits a character and to do so authentically often requires a comfort with dialect. This class focuses on building confidence in European accent work with a focus on England and Ireland. Experience how the actor relates to a dialect coach in the rehearsal room.
Since Hollywood’s earliest films, rare cinematic depictions of slave dwellings have provided an image of slave habitations for many Americans. From Edwin Porter’s 1903 silent film portrayal of Uncle Tom’s Cabin through director Steve McQueen’s 2013 award-winning film 12 Years a Slave, museum educator Julie Rose, Ph.D., will explore how slave life dwellings represented on film changed over the century.
Born and raised in Baghdad, Iraq, Maurice Shamash has fond memories of growing up in Iraq—until everything changed. Join us as we hear Mr. Shamash’s fascinating story that took him from Iraq to America, via Israel and Britain. This powerful personal testimony will offer unique insight into a once thriving Jewish community that is now virtually extinct.

Dr. Richard Alley will present “As the Tide Rises: Decades of Watching Ice Sheets Change.” Dr. Alley is an Evan Paugh University professor of geosciences at Penn State. He studies the great ice sheets to help predict future changes in climate and sea level, and has conducted field research in Antarctica, Greenland and Alaska. Dr. Alley participated in the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and is a co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Fest. The theremin is an electronic musical instrument controlled without physical contact by the musician. It
was patented in 1928 by Leon Theremin a Soviet inventor. Theremins have been used in many movie and TV
soundtracks, and professional thereminists still perform in concerts today! In this workshop, we will solder
together our very own theremins!
Every Saturday, artist, healing practitioner, and yoga instructor Ana Temple Rodney will lead a yoga session in the gallery.
Ana Temple Rodney is a spoken word poet, yoga instructor, and Reiki master.
