Lionel D. Lyles II was born in Boulder, Colorado. He majored in music education while at Morgan State University. The Lionel Lyles Quintet recorded it’s first studio project in 2006, “The Lionel Lyles Quintet: The September Sessions”. Soon after, Lionel enrolled at North Carolina Central University to persue a Master of Music in Jazz Studies Saxophone Performance. While at NCCU, he had the opportunity to study with great jazz icons such as Branford Marsalis, Joey Calderazzo, Jimmy Heath, Roy Hargrove, Brian Horton, and Dr. Ira Wiggins. The ensemble has two albums to date.

Dr. Richard Alley will present “As the Tide Rises: Decades of Watching Ice Sheets Change.” Dr. Alley is an Evan Paugh University professor of geosciences at Penn State. He studies the great ice sheets to help predict future changes in climate and sea level, and has conducted field research in Antarctica, Greenland and Alaska. Dr. Alley participated in the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and is a co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Reality proves a fertile playground for the imaginations of the artists showcased in Chroma. Sabine Carlson’s colorful oil paintings depict fragmented figurative imagery in abstracted landscapes, while Robert Mathews creates unsettling portraits of his ‘imaginary friends.’ A free reception on November 10 from 6-8pm is open to the public and will include light refreshments.
Artists who live, work, or study in Howard County, Maryland are the focus of Art Howard County 2017, a biennial, juried exhibit featuring work in a variety of media. This year’s guest juror is Thomas Engleman, Gallery Director and Professor of Visual Arts at Howard Community College, who will offer remarks and present juror awards at a free reception on November 10 from 6–8pm.

Music-lovers will not want to miss this performance by a mostly female sextet led by one of D.C.’s most outstanding jazz musicians, trombonist and composer Shannon Gunn. Hailed by Washington City Paper as “D.C.’s Best Trombonist, 2015,” Gunn is the leader of The Bullettes, an all-woman big band that has dazzled audiences at venues and festivals throughout the Washington, D.C. region. This sextet features stellar New York jazz flutist Jamie Baum, along with other highly talented local players.
