MICA presents “Germinal,” a solo exhibition consisting of a site-specific installation by B.F.A. Painting faculty Lauren Frances Adams. The exhibition explores themes converging around feminist activists from American history, domestic ornament in service of political messages, such as Quaker abolitionist quilts and pro-Confederacy secessionist cockades, and the recent removal of Baltimore’s Confederate monuments.

This national traveling panel exhibition tells the remarkable story of Alexander Hamilton, the statesman whose face is on the ten-dollar bill, but whose life is a mystery to most Americans. Hamilton (1757–1804), became the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury at age 32, and was a Revolutionary War soldier, financial and legal genius, opponent of slavery, and author of most of the Federalist Papers, which were critical in 1787–1788 in gaining popular support to ratify the Constitution.
Join Arts Every Day to celebrate the opening of our 10x10 Exhibit, inspired by the life and works of Jacob Lawrence and Joan Gaither, with Gary Mullen as curator. The 10x10 Exhibit invited all Baltimore City Public Schools to submit 10in x 10in artworks that celebrated themes of celebrate themes of identity, family heritage and culture. The exhibit features over 200 pieces of work and 16 Baltimore City Schools. This is a free and family friendly event.

Artist Hannah Leighton of Baltimore showcases her contemporary paintings. Leighton says that her paintings are inspired by “the shapes of stories, sounds and memories.”
Exploring universal themes of identity, dreams and family, REBELS ON POINTE is the first-ever documentary film celebrating the world famous Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo. The notorious all-male, drag ballet company was founded over 40 years ago in New York City on the heels of the Stonewall riots, and has a passionate cult following around the world. The film juxtaposes intimate behind-the-scenes access, rich archives and history, engaging character driven stories, and dance performances shot in North America, Europe and Japan.

Mwenso & The Shakes are an irrepressible musical force- part Sun Ra, James Brown, Kid Creole, Fats Wallers, and something alien altogether. Led by Sierra Leone born, London-raised, and New York-based front man and ring leader, Michael Mwenso, who the New York Times calls “a fervid vocalist and full-bore entertainer”, Mwenso & The Shakes take a past meets future meets distant future approach to jazz. As Mwenso states, “You’re getting a generation of holistic musicians who love Louis Armstrong just as much as Woody Shaw, Sidney Bechet as much as Ornette Coleman.
Artist Kirsten Lapointe invites you to a community-oriented encaustic workshop. Encaustic painting is an ancient painting technique that originated in Egypt. There will be demonstrations of a variety of encaustic techniques using real bees’ wax and tree resin. Participants will have the opportunity to explore and create at least one painting to take home.
