Baltimore, MD—The concepts of recycling and reuse are often viewed as a modern, even trendy approach to dealing with the overwhelming volume of material culture created by mankind. In the Walters’ new exhibition, Waste Not: The Art of Medieval Recycling, hidden stories behind more than 20 of the museum’s medieval art treasures are revealed through exciting discoveries about their pasts as recycled objects. It will be on view June 25 through September 18, 2016, and admission to the exhibition is free for everyone.

[The Carcass, 2006]
I had never seen a body like that before, sleeping in the pool of his iron
A posture so unnatural one would mistake it for theater
All of this over false necessity? Mined by iron; spilling iron
The end was met from a machine of iron.
Mined by lust; made by men.
[White Light, 1945]
When I learned of her past, I saved up the courage to ask her about that day.
“What was it like?” I asked.

The BMA presents an exquisite selection of late 19th- and mid-20th century kimonos and obis that have never been shown before. Obi are wide sashes wrapped around the kimono wearer's waist and tied in an ornate knot at the back. These stunning garments were made after the lifting of sumptuary laws during Japan’s Edo period (1603–1867) when commoners were forbidden to wear showy clothing with colors like red or purple. The Meiji Era (1868–1912) coincided with increased prosperity as Japan entered the industrial age and this newfound wealth was often expressed in lavish garments.
The inaugural exhibition for the BMA’s new Center for People & Art brings together 37 works from across the BMA’s collection to explore the universal theme of home. Visitors will discover paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, textiles, and works on paper from the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands, as well as four miniature rooms, plus a variety of interactive features presented in three thematic areas:
For this 2014 video, John Waters recast his 1972 cult film Pink Flamingos—considered one of the most notorious films ever made—with children reading a cleverly modified G-rated script. The 74-minute video shown on a continuous loop in the Black Box gallery features adorable kids wearing wigs and suggestions of the original costumes as they evoke the legendary performances of Divine, Mink Stole, Edith Massey, and others. Filmed in one day mostly with friends’ children, Waters has said the new version is in some ways more perverse than the original.
Queer Interiors is part of the BMA’s Commons Collaboration initiative, which commissions an artist and non-profit to work together on an installation and offer a series of public programs related to Imagining Home. The project conceived and produced by Rahne Alexander and Jaimes Mayhew is comprised of a larger-than-life bed, shelving and other furnishings, personal artifacts, and a multimedia wall quilt known as the Baltimore LGBTQI+ Home Movie Quilt.
