Soprano Danielle Buonaiuto and pianist Bethany Pietroniro will perform a range of music to the poetry of ee cummings, as the University of Baltimore's live performance series, Spotlight UB, kicks off its fall 2014 season on Thursday, Sept. 18. Compositions by Dominick Argento, Salvatore Martirano, John Musto, John Duke, Gary Bachlund, Ned Rorem, Aaron Copland, William Bolcom and David Diamond will be featured.

Musician and songwriter Iain Matthews was a founding member of the iconic British folk rock band Fairport Convention and went on to create the bands Plainsong and Southern Comfort. Matthews recently toured with acclaimed young bands Celebration, Wye Oak, and Beach House. Tonight he begins the evening sharing songwriting that has earned him a place in rock music history, performing with guitarist Jim Fogarty. The consummate outsider artist, Zane Campbell goes on second with an astonishing all star band.

Baltimore favorite, mezzo-soprano, and master cabaret artist, Jennifer Blades, reprises her role as Julia Child in Lee Hoiby's operatic monologue, "Bon Appétit" and sings other delicious songs, accompanied by the marvelous Diane Kinsley on piano, in an evening devoted to "Food, Glorious Food!"
Today, Deanna Bogart is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist and multifaceted musician whose fans value the diversity of her genre-free zone. As a bandleader/singer/songwriter/producer/pianist/sax player, Deanna combines the best of boogie-woogie, contemporary blues, country and jazz into a splendid blend she calls “blusion.”
With masterful musicianship and a supreme joy in the beauty of traditional music, Molly Mason and Jay Ungar are one of the most acclaimed musical duos in American roots music today. Jay's composition, Ashokan Farewell, became the musical hallmark of Ken Burns' The Civil War on PBS. The soundtrack won a Grammy and Ashokan Farewell was nominated for an Emmy.
Come experience an evening of music for violin and piano inspired by different cultures. The program will explore Spanish, Turkish, Armenian, Kurdish, and Hungarian traditions in masterpieces by Joaquín Turina, Fazıl Say, Komitas, Dilshad Said, and Pablo de Sarasate.
