Sephardim (Jews of Spanish or Arabic descent) lived in numerous diverse environments and developed practices that were infused with local flare and distinct from those of the Ashkenazim (Jews of European descent). This talk will discuss wedding traditions followed by different groups of Sephardim in the past, as well as those still practiced today by some communities. The presentation will pay attention to music, dress, and minhagim (customs), and introduce some Ladino (the Sephardic language analogue to Yiddish) proverbs and sayings that relate to this festive occasion.
Memphis is set in the places where rock and roll was born in the 1950s: the seedy nightclubs, radio stations and recording studios of the musically-rich Tennessee city. With an original score, it tells the fictional story of DJ Huey Calhoun, a good ole’ local boy with a passion for R&B music and Felicia Farrell, an up-and-coming black singer that he meets one fateful night on Beale Street. Despite the objections of their loved ones (Huey’s close-minded mama and Felicia’s cautious brother, a club owner), they embark on a dangerous affair.
Two artists, photographer Regina DeLuise and painter Gwen Hardie bring an unusually heightened attention to how light and shadow reveal the body within the physical world. The tenderness of the human experience has been an enduring and central subject in the photographs of Regina DeLuise. She works with film and a large format 8 x10 camera, which requires a collaborative and sympathetic engagement between herself and her subject. Her photographs reveal the essence of these encounters: an extended choreography of sensate observation.

Let Gilded Lily tape on their pasties, throw on some sequins, add a dash of va-va-voom and FIGHT THE POWER!

Ralph Fiennes steals the show in this witty, pretty caper from infamously quirky indie director Wes Anderson, who gave us Moonrise Kingdom and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.
Fiennes plays M. Gustave, a concierge at the titular hotel in the 1930s, in a magical, fictional Alpine town that can only resist the oncoming war for so long.
After inheriting a valuable painting from one of his many wealthy lovers (Tilda Swinton), Gustave makes an enemy of her family and winds up in prison accused of her murder.
