School 33 Art Center presents: This table is a drum I These feet are drumsticks I And I'm sick of it

A Call-And-Responce Performance by Marcus Civin as part of Shape Shifters: Performative Constructions by Renee Rendine, Marcus Civin, and Bobby English Jr., curated by Melissa Webb. Featuring drummers Sierra Gaither, Terence Hannum, and John Lemonds.

Part sculpture, part puppet show, part concert, part poetry reading, This table is a drum/These feet are drumsticks/And I’m sick of it is an installation featuring floor-to-ceiling call-and-response wall poems and a large worktable that serves as a functional drum. Throughout the exhibition, visitors are invited to use specially crafted wooden feet to play the drum. Three rousing drumming and poetry performances over the course of the exhibit will engage audiences in shouting, stomping… and more shouting.

"Repeat After Me: I am music! I am music! I am my neighborhood! I am my neighborhood! I am my own! I am my own! I am no one's sweetheart! I am no one's sweetheart! I am not you! I am not you! I am oceans! I am oceans! I am sharp! I am sharp! I am the root of the matter! I am the root of the matter!"

This installation builds on Civin's previous writings, drawings, and performances that consider American violence, wounds, and bandages. Civin considers feet as prime vehicles for protest. This work explores what it takes to march--to move your body through space as a statement.
