Film Screening: I Don't Belong Anywhere: The Cinema of Chantal Akerman

Dir. Marianne Lambert
Belgium, 2015, 67 mins.
In French and English, with English subtitles.

I DON'T BELONG ANYWHERE: THE CINEMA OF CHANTAL AKERMAN explores some of the Belgian filmmaker's 40 plus films from Brussels to Tel Aviv, and from Paris to New York, the film charts her authorial journey.

An experimental filmmaker and a nomad, Chantal Akerman shared her cinematic trajectory with Marianne Lambert, and it’s one that never ceased to interrogate the meaning of her existence. With her editor and long-time collaborator Claire Atherton, she examines the origins of her film language, and aesthetic stance.

I DON'T BELONG ANYWHERE includes excerpts from many films made throughout Akerman's career, including JEANNE DIELMAN, 23, QUAI DU COMMERCE, 1080 BRUXELLES (1975), NEWS FROM HOME (1976), THE RENDEZ-VOUS OF ANNA, JE, TU, IL, ELLE (1974), SOUTH (1998), FROM THE EAST (1993), FROM THE OTHER SIDE (2002), LÀ-BAS (2006), and, what would be Chantal Akerman's last film, NO HOME MOVIE (2015).

“Akerman cuts a fascinating figure worthy of both study and praise – and leaves a body of work that will endure… The film communicates this insight through intimate conversations with her, cross-cut with well-chosen clips from her expansive body of work… The cumulative effect helps bring an artist, whose work is often heady, down to a wonderfully relatable human scale.” – Sean Egan, The Villager
