TRACES, Ni de aquí, Ni de allá

TRACES, Ni de aquí, Ni de allá

Area 405 is pleased to host TRACES, Ni de aquí, Ni de allá, a 2016 Curatorial Practice MFA thesis exhibition. Curated by Ashley DeHoyos and featuring the works of Krissty Batres, Nicoletta Daríta de la Brown, Gabrielle Velez, René Treviño, Ricardo Vicente Jose Ruiz, Justin Zachary, Irvin Morazan, Edgar Reyes, Jorge Galvan and Ryan Flores.

Thinking about the accepted norms and distorted influence of the Western lens on arts and culture, TRACES questions and confronts the Eurocentric standards and expectations too often placed on Latin American artists. Through visual art and performance, TRACES unpacks the connections between one’s environment, heritage, and experience. Using digital media, photography, sculpture, fiber, and other approaches, the artists featured respond and investigate traces of their own histories and influences in relation to past histories, ideologies and current art trends.

TRACES, Ni de aquí, Ni de allá (neither here, nor there) reflects the cultural complexities of Latinidad and examines the aesthetic values and characteristics of producing work under the Latin American umbrella. Featuring ten artists currently living in Maryland, Virginia, Texas, and Philadelphia with diverse familia heritage across the Latin American diaspora–that span from Mexico, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Panama, California, Texas, and New York.

Live performances by Krissty Batres and Nicoletta de La Brown will take place in the gallery on Friday, April 1st from starting at 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Curated By: Ashley D. DeHoyos
