Devil May Care

Devil May Care

Devil May Care (Phaan Howng, Joe Crawford Pile, Kyle Kogut)
at Current Space, 421 N Howard, Baltimore, MD, 21201
March 5-27, 2016
Opening Reception: Saturday, March 5, 2016, 7-10pm

Current Space is pleased to present Devil May Care, works in drawing, painting and sculpture by Phaan Howng, Joe Crawford Pile and Kyle Kogut, curated by Selina Doroshenko.

Devil May Care features artwork created in the embers of toil and destruction. The futility of human life, the synthetic spectacle of social constructs and the insidiousness of entropic environments pervade the works of these artists. They remove the devil from the details and put him in the spotlight. Their works are a reminder that life is short, artificial and uneasy. As Nietzsche wrote, “Art alone can redirect those repulsive thoughts about the terrible or absurd nature of existence into representations with which man can live; these representations are the sublime…whereby disgust at absurdity is discharged by artistic means.”[1] Humanity’s foolish waste and needless extensions have us on a conveyor belt headed straight to hell, while nature seethes and hisses, looming at every corner. The struggle for dominance and meaning in life’s relentless cycle is at the heart and gut of the exhibition.
