Detroit '67
The music and politics of the Motown era sizzle in the background of Detroit ’67. Siblings Chelle and Lank make ends meet by holding late-night basement parties, flying just under the radar of the increased police presence in the all-black neighborhood, until a battered white woman enters their lives and permanently changes the family dynamic. Detroit ’67, which premiered in 2011 at New York’s Public Theater under the directorial helm of Center Stage Artistic Director Kwame Kwei-Armah, is the first play in the Detroit trilogy by award-winning playwright and “Shameless” (Showtime) screenwriter Dominique Morisseau.
