Civil War to Civil Rights: A Concert

Hear creative music compositions that span two centuries from early composers Scott Joplin, Samuel Coleridge Taylor and William Still to contemporary musicians, James Weldon Johnson, Odetta, Nina Simone, the Staple Singers and more. Benny Russell is an accomplished Jazz composer and musician who toured with internationally known musician and humanitarian Harry Belafonte; led the “Next Legacy Orchestra” in New York; has written and composed numerous projects highlighting African American historical gures including Nat Turner; Langston Hughes and the Civil Rights Movement. One project titled “Spiritual Musings” in 2013 commemorated the 50 anniversary of several pivotal events. and directs the Jazz Ensemble at Harford Community College where he teaches woodwind instruments and the sought after course “Popular Music of the United States.”
