The Holiday Special - 'The Santa Closet' and 'The Seven Poor Travellers'

The Holiday Special - 'The Santa Closet' and 'The Seven Poor Travellers'

Celebrate the holidays at Theatre Project with a double bill of solo performances!

Act 1 - The Santa Closet, written and performed by Jeffrey Solomon: When a little boy's gender atypical gift request to the North Pole is denied, a series of heart-felt letters from the child nudge Santa Claus out of the closet, and into the culture wars.

The play's Off Broadway run was heralded as "Hilarious" and "Brilliant" by Broadway World and Out Magazine. The New York Times raved: "A Delightful Surprise! ... This isn't a clumsy parody, but a sensitive, imaginative tale that really is about a boy's realization that he is different. Mr. Solomon portrays an amazing range of characters, all of them beautifully."

A theatrical documentarian in the mold of Anna Deveare Smith and the Laramie Project, Mr. Solomon purports to have interviewed, and portrays, all of the key players in the scandal that has come to be known as 'Santa-Gate'.

"The Santa Closet provides a disarming, alternative gift for the holidays." -- Tim Smith, The Baltimore Sun

Act 2 - The Seven Poor Travellers, adapted and performed by Charlie Bethel from the classic Charles Dickens Christmas story: A nameless traveller arrives at an inn on Christmas eve, and hosts the holiday feast for the other guests. When they ask him, late into the evening, to tell them a story, he relates a tragic, funny, riveting, and uplifting tale from his own life, a tale that newly uncovers the true meaning of Christmas for all.

"Bethel is expert at weaving Dickens' highly descriptive prose to tickle our senses. His performance is animated but not antic, and through it, it's possible to see the battlefields, to smell the wassail, to taste the feast and to feel the anguish." -- The Pioneer Press

"Bethel's delivery gave me that "edge-of-my-seat" feeling that only gifted storytellers elicit. From beginning to end, I was riveted. To use a phrase of Dickens' myself, every aspect of Charlie Bethel's performance of The Seven Poor Travellers "was eloquent of Christmas." Go see it while it's still in town." -- Patricia Mitchell, DC Metro Theater Arts
