Over two packed nights, we celebrate the seductive and virtuosic legacy of Django Reinhardt with some of the finest U.S. musicians who use his Manouche Gypsy sound as springboard for thrilling new musical adventures.

Friday: Friday night kicks off the two day fest with a special performance by Baltimore’s ownUltrafaux who play original Gypsy jazz music composed by guitarist Michael Joseph Harris. The band is an acoustic powerhouse of two guitars and an upright bass. As with all Creative Alliance Ultrafaux performances, expect surprise special guests!

Down from NYC, Friday night closes with one of the most thrilling young hot jazz groups in the world. Named after a Django Reinhardt tune, the Rhythm Future Quartet performs dynamic and fiery arrangements of Gypsy jazz standards and original compositions that draw from rhythms heard around the world.

Jason Anick and Olli Soikkeli, the front-men and lead soloists of the group, are considered ‘rising stars’ in the world of jazz and Gypsy jazz. Olli Soikkeli, who recently made the move from his home country of Finland to New York City, is rapidly becoming a top call guitarist in the bustling Brooklyn jazz scene and has been aptly coined “the Finnish boy wonder”.

Saturday: Saturday kicks off with a bang with Mary Alouette and the Crew. Now based in Brooklyn, Mary was living in Maryland when she was first introduced to the classic sound of Django Reinhardt through performances by the Hot Club of DC. She has since blended her expansive vision, lovely voice, and mastery of electronics with the delicate melodies and blazing solos of Django Reinhardt’s acoustic sound. The results are nothing less than mesmerizing: electric, jazzy, psychedelic, progressive, soothing, and urgent – as she slips in and out of genres, and defies definition.

Saturday closes with one of the most original and finest players in the modern hot jazz scene. Stephane Wremble has been called “a revelation” by Rolling Stone. Woody Allen recruited him to score the theme to the 2012 Academy Award winning film Midnight in Paris, and he performed live during this year’s Oscars telecast. To say that French-born guitarist/composer—who learned his craft among Manouche Gypsy musicians at campsites in the French countryside—has already had a remarkable career would be an understatement. Tonight, the now Brooklyn-based guitar player closes the festival by performing with a his full band. Expect musical fireworks.
