Waxworking + Casting

Waxworking + Casting

Metal casting involves the transformation of a fluid wax model into an identical metal reproduction and is one of the most widely used techniques in the jewelry world. Through a series of demonstrations and lectures, students will learn wax working skills and casting processes, including rubber mold making, natural object, vacuum and cuttlefish casting. The class will also incorporate metal fabrication skills including soldering, polishing, and finishing methods. Students will utilize these skills to create jewelry and small-scale sculpture. Slide presentations and discussions provide an overview of the historical and contemporary role of casting. The emphasis throughout is to encourage creative thinking, mastery of technical skills, and aesthetic principles. This course is directed at the beginning student but is open to students of all levels. No experience necessary.
