It's After the End of the World: Afrofuturism in Visual Culture

Lecture by Jazmin Smith followed by the premiere of Emily Eaglin's film "The Afrofuturist Manifesto."

About Afrofuturism:
An Afrofuturist work is one that is both speculative and specific to the experiences of the African diaspora. Common themes of Afrofuturist art include alien abduction, the final frontier, re-imagining history, and race as technology. These themes are found in fantasy, magical realism, and science fiction in general but when explored through the lens of the Africana experience the work becomes Afrofuturist.

About the film:
"The Afrofuturist Manifesto" takes place in 2975 and features a reimagining of "race," as well as an exploration of how ideologies change over time. Eaglin's work questions the scales that humans use to measure themselves while envisioning a constructive way to celebrate theiridentities.
