SLAVE SHIP

SLAVE SHIP

"SLAVE SHIP" by Amiri Baraka and "DIVERGENT" a tribute to Amiri Baraka are both a study in distinct historical experiences in African-American history and present day experiences. The audience becomes witness to slave travel during the Middle Passage from Africa to America, during a plantation-era uprising, and in the era of the civil rights movement. Baraka's playutilizes the representation of African-American history as a means of forging a communal African-American identity through the preservation of African cultural roots. The use of music throughout the play is central to the theme of African-American cultural identity and communal solidarity. Lets watch the connection to present day issues, Trayvon Martin, Fergurson, Missouri, Baltimore, Maryland and America in general. Join the Q and A after the performance for a meaningful discussion.
