A Choral Celebration of J. Spencer Hammond

A Choral Celebration of J. Spencer Hammond

A concert of spirituals and classical choral works will honor renowned African American organist and choir director J. Spencer Hammond. Hammond was Minister of Music at Douglas Memorial Community Church for almost 40 years, serving with civil rights activits Rev. Marion Bascom. Hammond's choirs were widely celebrated, and his men's choir sang at the White House in 1969. The program, which Mr. Hammond chose, includes spirituals by the great African American composers R. Nathaniel Dett, Undine Smith Moore, Wendell Whalum, and Robert L. Morris. Also on the program are selections from Brahms’ “A German Requiem,” and Mendelssohn’s “St. Paul,” as well as works by Fauré and Franck. Former members of Mr. Hammond’s choirs at Douglas Memorial Community Church will join Brown Memorial’s Chancel Choir in singing the concert’s concluding work, Harry T. Burleigh’s “My Lord, What a Mornin,” which Spencer Hammond himself will conduct. The main conductors of the concert will be Michael Britt, Brown Memorial’s Minister of Music, and Tom Hall, director of Baltimore Choral Arts. Britt and John Walker, Brown’s Minister of Music emeritus and president of the American Guild of Organists, will play the church’s 1930 Skinner organ. This concert is part of the Tiffany Series, named for Brown Memorial Park Avenue Church’s unparalleled collection of 11 original Tiffany stained glass windows. Event proceeds benefit the church’s mission programs in Baltimore and beyond including Brown Memorial’s Tutoring Program, now celebrating its 50th year. Parking and shuttle service will be available. NOTE: RESCHEDULED because of snow. Concert is now March 1, 2015.
