This one week exhibition will function both as a site-specific installation of redolent costumes and props and also a restaging of the artist’s personal history. The artist has sought a cast of peers and previous collaborators in
order to fully activate this body of work. This event signifies the conclusion of The Circus Acts Series, which was realized during the artist’s recent transition into adulthood. As a newly naturalized citizen, this exhibition also marks and celebrates the artist’s tenth year living in America after being uprooted from Cameroon, Africa at the age of 11.
In order to construct a material logic for The Circus Acts Series, the artist was first informed by conventional leitmotifs and tropes of circus culture, sometimes witnessed as a liminal site of queered spectacles. This language has been camouflaged into self-referential sets of objects that are neither full appropriations or functional readymades. It is a social commentary that attempts to bridge together formative accounts of adulthood including a traumatic loss of innocence, lustful sexual awakening, introduction to Future Feminism, the death of a homonym, transcyborgian bodies, and violent desires of objects of fetish.
