Drawing on the history of avant-garde moving image culture, conceptual poetics, ecstatic improvisation, dense wordplay and humor, Jesse makes art using moving images, text, performance, installation and the overlaps and gaps thereof. These works are conceptually engaged, language-intensive and visually mesmerizing. Through deliberate mistranslation and the strategic denaturing of languages and codes, Jesse revels in and revealing their extra-communicative potential as sound, as image, as object, and shift audiences’ concepts of the show, of the cinema.

BIOGRAPHY

JESSE MALMED (1983, Santa Fe) is an artist and curator living and working in Chicago.

Corollary to his creative work, Jesse is the co-director of mobile exhibition space and artist bumper sticker project Trunk Show, a programmer at the Nightingale Cinema, the founder/director of the peripatetic Deep Leap Microcinema and a 2014-15 Links Hall Curatorial Fellow. He writes about and interviews experimental media practitioners for Chicago contemporary arts blog Bad at Sports, for Chicago cinema advocacy list CINE-FILE and a range of other publications. He is a former collective member of Cinema Project and board member at the Creative Music Guild.

Jesse earned his MFA in Moving Image at the University of Illinois at Chicago and BA in Film and Electronic Arts at Bard College and has lived/worked in Tivoli, Santa Fe, San Francisco and Portland. He has screened, exhibited and performed at spaces such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Photography, 2012 Shanghai Biennale, Portland Art Museum's Northwest Film Center, The Utah Museum of Fine Art, DINCA Vision Quest, Spectacle Theater, three walls, Light Industry, Artists' Television Access, Echo Park Film Center, Northwest Film Forum, Center for Contemporary Arts, Gallery 400, The Nightingale, the Chicago Underground Film Festival, the Milwaukee Underground Film Festival, Experiments in Cinema, Experimental Film Festival Portland, galleryHOMELAND, Place Gallery, Space 1026, Skylab, Screen Gallery, High Mayhem, Microscope Gallery, The University of Oregon, University of New Mexico, Bard College and Skidmore College. He was named one Newcity's Breakout Artists of 2014.
