Jazz on Sundays: Kristin Callahan

Jazz on Sundays: Kristin Callahan

Everyone in the jazz scene today who has heard Kristin Callahan is in agreement--her voice is fresh, vibrant, and one to watch in the years to come. Kristin has that rare ability to coax listeners into the anticipation of each note, enticing people into the very soul of the music. Quiet and unassuming, Callahan has a stage presence that is both sweet and sexy, one that catches everyone off guard and then keeps them there until the very last note. From her lovely smiles between songs to her flawless execution of some of the most demanding pieces, Kristin exudes the perfect combination of country charm and urbane hipness.

Kristin has been singing since she could speak, and she was fortunate to have her church and school community recognize her talent and encourage her to develop it over the years. As a young artist, she received a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music summer program. In the decade since, Kristin has been actively performing, being featured on many electronic artists’ albums in the DC/Baltimore area and performing throughout the region. She spent many years exploring different genres, until she discovered a love for jazz. In 2009, while recording her first album, “A New Love”, she met Vince Evans, prolific teacher and pianist, and began to study under him. Evans’ mentorship has continued to be an inspiration to Kristin.

Today, Kristin is fully focused on her art, mesmerizing listeners with a contribution to jazz that is entirely her own. She has been recording and performing with several accomplished musicians, and has just completed her second album, “One Magic Day,” which includes many phenomenal musicians, such as the remarkable vibraphonist Warren Wolf, as well as Eric Wheeler, JC Jefferson Jr. and Vince Evans.
