Hollins Market Second Annual Amateur Chess Tournament

Hollins Market Second Annual Amateur Chess Tournament

Can playing the game of chess help build community and encourage individuals to think differently and strategize to improve their lives? Baltimore’s Quiet Time Inspirations gift shop owner and minister Kim Hicks believes so. That’s why she’s organized the Second Annual Amateur Chess Tournament Saturday, June 17 (Father’s Day weekend) at the historic Hollins Market in Baltimore.

The tournament is open to players of all ages who want to have fun and hone problem-solving skills together, while competing for a chance to win prizes ranging from $25 to $100.

According to Kim, chess is becoming increasingly popular in the local community with many residents ordering their own sets. The first tournament, held in 2016, attracted more than 60 participants ranging in age from 10 to 72.

The 2017 tournament takes place outdoors at the Carrollton Avenue entrance to the Market (26 S. Arlington Avenue 21223). The schedule is:

• 12-12:45 pm On site player registration

• 1 to 3 pm Tournament underway

• 4 pm Tournament ends

The $10 registration fee includes five games, Chessman cookies, coupons, and more. Participants can register in advance on the Quiet Times Inspiration Facebook page or on Eventbrite.com. Discounts are offered for group registrations. More information is available by calling 410-370-7385 or on Facebook.

The historic Hollins Market, one of four Baltimore Public Markets, is located in southwest Baltimore City. Originally built in 1877, it is now home to numerous produce and meat vendors, as well as retailers such as Quiet Time. More information is available at http://bpmarkets.com.
