Pro Musica Rara concert, "Bohemian Baroque"

Pro Musica Rara concert, "Bohemian Baroque"

Pro Musica Rara, Baltimore’s premier early music ensemble, with Paul Leenhouts, recorder; Cynthia Roberts, violin; Dongsok Shin, harpsichord; and artistic director Allen Whear, cello.

Bohemian Baroque. It has been said that one of Bohemia’s major exports has always been musicians. Eighteenth century Prague – the “Heart of Europe”—was a great crossroads of cultures, due to the reigning power of the Hapsburg dynasty. PMR’s program includes trio sonatas by 18th century Czech composers Jan Dismas Zelenka and Jan Zach, as well as influential Austrian contemporaries Franz Biber and Johann Schmelzer. There will be a free, pre-concert lecture, and a chance to meet the musicians after the concert.

Now in its 42nd season, Pro Musica Rara is a professional chamber music group that performs baroque, classical, and early romantic repertoire on period instruments. PMR’s core musicians are early music specialists who perform in distinguished ensembles all over the world. Every year’s concert series brings in other internationally renowned musicians – so that each concert has a unique musical theme and focus. PMR’s repertoire goes beyond frequently-played standards.
