Together We Stand is an evening length piece created by Baltimore-based choreographer Domineka Reeves. This dance is an intriguing exploration of historically, socially, and politically controversial issues within America.
Reeves uses these three subjects which offer a vast amounts of inspiration in this world of controversy to help her center on racial and gender issues. When audience member observes the sharp, staccato, and fluid movements within the piece, some of the inspiration stems from the past years of African American Slavery. However, gender inequality is displayed when Reeves transitions her movements into an attitude of dominance that characterizes her inner feminist.
In addition, she uses four other bodies to help express her ancestral roots that tie in to her closeness to the racial and gender issues. Furthermore, there are various elements of emotion, unique auditory, and videography that are the underlying drive behind her work.
