Photographing the (Urban) Landscape: Explorations of Highlandtown and Patterson Park w/ Adam Davies, Creative Alliance Resident Artist

“Happy are those who see beautiful things in unassuming places where others see nothing. Everything is beautiful, what matters is to know how to interpret it. “ -Camille Pissarro, 1893.

This single session comprehensive workshop offers an opportunity to explore and photograph the diverse landscape of Highlandtown. We will consider different methods of capturing urban and natural sites with the camera. Our projects will test the unique capabilities of the camera as a representational and artistic tool. Through a variety of different activities — experimenting with depth of field and long exposures, composition and assemblage — we will discuss how the camera can be operated and manipulated to create innovative images of the landscape.

Open to all levels. Students provide their own cameras. A basic understanding of your digital camera is needed, including how to set the camera to manual controls for aperture and shutter speed. Bringing your own tripod is recommended, but optional.

Adam Davies is a full-time artist and educator, having taught individual photography workshops at residencies and photo organizations. His previous experience includes developing educational programming as Lecturer & Media Specialist at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, in addition to offering full courses at Catholic University, Carnegie Mellon University, Robert Morris University, and Harvard University.
