Join the Baltimore Architecture Foundation in our annual celebration of Groundhog Day and annual fundraiser at a Baltimore architectural landmark.

Each year the BAF celebrates the meteorological prophesying of furry marmots at an architectural landmark in Baltimore. This year we’ll be imbibing at the Elephant, an 1850s mansion that was renovated over time by its many occupants, eventually becoming the Brass Elephant in the 1970s, predecessor to the newly opened Elephant of today. Mingle with fellow architects and architecture enthusiasts in this recently renovated gem replete with Lockwood de Forest teak furnishings and Tiffany glass.

The event will include drinks, heavy hors d’oeuvres and a tour of the building.

The event is a major fundraiser in support of BAF and its many programs, from fostering the next generation of architects, to promoting the value of Baltimore’s architectural legacy to the public. Programs include tours, scholarships, publications, exhibitions, and the annual Doors Open Baltimore event.

The Baltimore Architecture Foundation is a 501(c3) nonprofit organization. $60 of each ticket is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

About the Venue

924 North Charles Street was built in the 1850s by Benjamin Chew Howard, U.S. congressman and son of Revolutionary War hero John Eager Howard. From the 1860s to the 1890s, the mansion became the winter residence of coffee importer Charles Morton Stewart and his family. The mansion received a luxurious makeover when merchant George Wroth Knapp and his family took it on as their second home in the 1890s. He spared no expense in acquiring the finest furnishings of the period: Rinehart marble sculpture, Waterford crystal, de Forest teak, and Tiffany glass.

924 North Charles Street was converted to commercial use in the 1930s by Potthast Furniture Brothers. It became the Brass Elephant restuarant in the 1970s, which closed in 2009. In 2015, Linda and Steven Rivelis purchased the building and renovating it, creating the Elephant.

Logistics

Event will take place at the second floor bar. Valet parking available for $10. There are also paid parking lots at the Belvedere and at Charles and Eager Streets.
