Suzan Lori-Parks' Fucking A, inspired by the novel The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1850, provides a bleak and dystopian view of the sadistic power games we are forced to play as members of today's modern society. Where its players are subject to arbitrary imprisonment, and where sexuality and fertility are discussed in an alternate language. Set in "a small town in a small country in the middle of nowhere,” Hester Smith works the only job available - abortionist to the lower class, in order to save for a reunion picnic with her 'wrongfully' imprisoned son. Her branded A bleeding afresh every time a patient arrives. A dark fable that includes brief sardonic songs in the style of Kurt Weill such as "Working Woman's Song" and "My Little Army."
