UMD Symphony Orchestra: Shostakovich Violin Concerto
The UMD Symphony Orchestra performs Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1, featuring soloist Sharon Oh, winner of the 2015 UMSO Concerto Competition. Composed during a time of intense censorship in post-war Russia, the concerto remained unpublished until after Stalin’s death. Also on the program are the triumphal Sibelius Symphony No. 3 and Strauss’ tone poem Don Juan, based on Don Juans Ende, a play derived from an unfinished 1844 retelling of the tale by poet Nikolaus Lenau.
