Caleb Stine's Round the Mountain

Caleb Stine's Round the Mountain

Caleb Stine, Baltimore’s beloved tall and handsome folk troubadour, revives his Round the Mountain show, and he is rested, recharged, and ready for action. For this iteration of Round the Mountain, Caleb will host a night of music that explores mountain melodies and the West African musical intersect with old time music. Expect a night of transcendent harmony singing, masterful musicianship, and cross-cultural surprises.

With:

The Whitetop Mountaineers: Martha Spencer and Jackson Cunningham both live in Whitetop, VA, at the highest peak in Virginia, a region known for a deep tradition of keeping mountain music alive. Their shows features old time country duet singing, up tempo instrumentals, and high energy Appalachian dancing.

Martha is the daughter of the Thorton and Emily Spencer, anchors of the highly influential and truly awesome Whitetop Mountain Band. Her uncle Albert Hash was legendary fiddler and instrument maker who gained widespread attention for his music and craft. Her great-grandfather, Bud Spencer, won many big dance competitions, including one at the Whitetop Folk Festival in the 1930s. Martha began dancing and playing at a very young age. Martha sings and plays fiddle, banjo, guitar, bass, and dulcimer. 'She has won competitions on banjo, fiddle, and vocals and has also been widely recognized for her Appalachian dancing.

Jackson, originally from Oregon, also grew up in a musical family. His father played several instruments, including guitar and harmonica and sang country and traditional music. Jackson's grandmother was also a very accomplished musician, singer, and music teacher. When he was nine-years-old, Jackson began playing the guitar. Later, he picked up mandolin, harmonica, and clawhammer banjo as well. Jackson is also a truly fine harmony singer.

In the past years, Jackson has taken up instrument making and has been taught by the likes of Wayne C. Henderson and Audrey Hash Ham. His guitars and fiddles are gaining attention for their stunning visual design and their fine tone. If we are lucky, Jackson will have a number of these instruments on display tonight.
