Silent Score: Mexico’s Troker score “The Grey Automobile”

It’s easy to see why Rolling Stone Mexico named Troker as one of 2016 top 20 Mexican artists breaking boundaries. If Salvador Dali ever made a heist movie, then Troker would have composed the soundtrack. Their sound careens between sublime and dangerous, and can turn on a dime from precise and complex to wild and free. The six-piece group merges metal riffage with powerhouse funk drumming and DJ scratching, and pulls jazz and the mariachi tradition of their homeland.

For this evening, Troker will debut their newest project for Baltimore audiences, providing a live, original score the 1919 Mexican silent film classic, The Grey Automobile. Following the film (117 min run time), they will play a short set of original music.

The members of Troker met in 2004 in Guadalajara, Mexico, where they live and work to this day. In 2013 and 2014, they became the first band ever to play two consecutive years at the West Holts Stage at the legendary Glastonbury Festival in England. In 2014, they were both SXSW and WOMEX official showcasing artists

About "The Grey Automobile": Directed by Enrique Rosas, El Automovil Gris (1919) was filmed in Mexico prior to the Mexican film boom of the 1920s and is one of the few surviving Mexican silent films. It synthesizes many elements popular in international cinema. El Auto was originally a 12 chapter serial, and now the film survives in an edited down version. Rosas filmed on location where the actual events occurred, giving audiences a rare glimpse into the city streets of the late 1910s.

The plot of the The Grey Automobile is more than just a cops and robbers shootout. The initial audience was quite familiar with the story of the Grey Automobile Gang who terrorized the streets of Mexico City almost a century ago. Many of the actors/actresses in the film are actual key players in the gang escapades of the Grey Automobile Gang.
